Hello Hello! How are you?
It’s been a few months since I’ve posted this kind of blog post, but I’m excited to be back blogging and this was a post I wanted to keep every other week!
I’ve also somehow acquired a few books lately since I treated myself as a reward for finishing my thesis on time, so I’ve got loads of new material for FLF posts!
First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?
- Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page.
- Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first.
- Finally… reveal the book!
Rain fell that night, a fine, whispering rain. Many years later, Meggie had only to close her eyes and she could still hear it, like tiny fingers tapping on the windowpane. A dog barked somewhere in the darkness, and however often she tossed and turned Meggie couldn’t get to sleep.
But what book is this quote from?
Inkheart (#1 Inkworld) by Cornelia Funke
Twelve-year-old Meggie learns that her father, who repairs and binds books for a living, can “read” fictional characters to life when one of those characters abducts them and tries to force him into service.
Characters from books literally leap off the page in this engrossing fantasy. Meggie has had her father to herself since her mother went away when she was young. Mo taught her to read when she was five, and the two share a mutual love of books. He can “read” characters out of books. When she was three, he read aloud from a book called Inkheart and released characters into the real world. At the same time, Meggie’s mother disappeared into the story. This “story within a story” will delight not just fantasy fans, but all readers who like an exciting plot with larger-than-life characters.
I’ve literally seen this book about everywhere for such a long time, but I’ve only just gotten a copy! I love the sound of the blurb and the cover is absolutely stunning, so I can’t wait to dive in and read this exciting fantasy!
That’s all for now, I hope you enjoyed reading this post.
See you soon, stay safe,
Ellie xx
