Hello Hello! How are you?
I’m finding my blogging groove again and I’m so happy to be writing this post today. I’ve been struggling with reading and really getting lost in books in the past two months, but I know I can always count on middle-grade books to captivate me and make me forget the world, even if it’s just for a little while!
I’m excited to tell you what book we will be reading in August – spoiler, the cover is GORGEOUS – keep on reading!!
But first, let’s see where we got to with our July book!
In July, the Middle Grade Marvels have been reading The Girl Who Speaks Bear by Sophie Anderson, and I think we can all agree that this is a great book! I have the final section to read for our discussion on Saturday, but I am just loving it so much. What I like the most are the little stories that appear every few chapters. They make the book feel a bit like a fairy tale. I also have to say that it’s both whimsical/magical and dark – so a proper winter read! I can’t wait to continue and finish this book, and I know I’ll be picking up more books by this author soon!
If you don’t know what this book club is, head over to my announcement post here, Noly’s announcement post here, and Holly’s announcement post here. If you are interested in joining our book club on Twitter or Goodreads, you can find all the information you need for March in the pinned tweet at @GradeMarvels.
The August BOTM information Tweet has been published and pinned, so you may already know that in August we will be reading Brightstorm by Vashti Hardy.
I have to admit that I have never seen this book about, but I don’t know how that is possible because the cover is gorgeous, and the blurb sounds great. I feel like we will all go on an adventure as we read this book. This book club has been great for discovering new titles and authors, and this is such a case, I can’t wait to start it!
Arthur and Maudie Brightstorm are devastated to learn that their famous explorer father has died in a failed attempt to reach South Polaris, the southernmost point in the world. To make matters worse, the Lontown Geographical Society finds Ernest Brightstorm guilty of sabotaging the expedition of his competitor, Eudora Vane, a respected and powerful member of the Society.
But then a mysterious clue leads the twins to question the story they’ve been told. Joining the ragtag crew of the Aurora, a homemade sky-ship captained by the intrepid Harriet Culpepper, Arthur and Maudie race to South Polaris to salvage their family’s reputation.
As the sky-ship sets sail, the twins must keep their wits about them if they are to uncover the truth about what happened on their father’s doomed expedition, and to prove themselves worthy explorers.
Brightstorm is a propulsive, vividly imagined fantasy adventure set among vibrant landscapes and peopled with dynamic and unforgettable characters.
