Hello Hello! How are you?
Today I’m doing something a little different on my blog! For the past year, I have tried to post a Down the TBR Hole post every Friday. However, I’ve been so busy lately, that I’ve just not had the time to write them up. I decided that I wanted to change things up a little bit, so from now on, I will be alternating between a First Lines Fridays post and a Down the TBR Hole post on Fridays!
So welcome to the first-ever First Lines Friday on my blog! I’ve seen this meme about for such a long time, and always wanted to do it, so I’m excited to get started!
First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?
- Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page.
- Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first.
- Finally… reveal the book!
Today’s first lines are….
“The frog wasn’t Tala’s fault this time. Short-circuiting Winona Burgess’s bespelled car? Accident, but yeah – that was her doing. Nullifying the glamour spells in Sandra Monroe’s phone? Sandra was a horrible bully; Tala remained unrepentant. Negating the cheating enchantment Devon Nash tried to smuggle in during last week’s calculus test? That was deliberate; Mrs. Powell graded on a curve. Magic barely worked in Invierno, this dry, forgotten armpit of a town in Arizona, so nobody ever knew Tala was responsible.”
But what book is this quote from?
Wicked As You Wish (#1 A Hundred Names for Magic) by Rin Chupeco
When a hidden prince, a girl with secrets, a ragtag group of unlikely heroes, and a legendary firebird come together…something wicked is going down.
Many years ago, the magical Kingdom of Avalon was left encased in ice when the Snow Queen waged war. Its former citizens are now refugees in a world mostly devoid of magic. Which is why the crown prince and his protectors are stuck in…Arizona.
Prince Alexei, the sole survivor of the Avalon royal family, is hiding in a town so boring, magic doesn’t even work there. Few know his secret identity, but his friend Tala is one of them.
A new hope for their abandoned homeland reignites when a famous creature of legend, the Firebird, appears for the first time in decades. Alex and Tala must unite with a ragtag group of new friends to journey back to Avalon for a showdown that will change the world as they know it.

I have had a copy of this book on my shelves for the past year or so, and I still haven’t picked it up, despite it sounding exactly like something I would love, so I will have to bump it up the TBR list I think!
Have you read this book yet? What did you think of it?
That’s all for now, I hope you enjoyed reading this post, see you soon, stay safe,
Ellie xx
I’m proud that I actually recognized this opening! I tried this book, but ended up DNFing it, as it wasn’t quite for me, but I know several bloggers who loved it! So I’d definitely recommend giving it a try when you get a chance. 😉
Ah that’s a shame but we can’t all like all the books unfortunately! Thank you, I will try it out soon! 🙂
