Hello Hello! How are you?

Today I am thrilled that it is my stop of the #blogtour organised by Dave from @The_WriteReads for Marrow Charm by Kristin Jacques, the 6th place #BBNYA2020 finalist! I am in the middle of reading this book and I thought I would have finished by my stop, but life happened and I was unable to finish it on time, so I have opted to post a spotlight with my thoughts so far. Keep your eyes peeled for my full review which will hopefully go up next week!

I received this book to read and review as part of the BBNYA 2020 competition and the BBNYA tours organised by @The_WriteReads tours team. All opinions are my own.

GOODREADS SYNOPSIS

Azure Brimvine lives in a world decimated by magic. One where humans have retreated underground from the overwhelming dangers of the surface. But Below is no safer than Above. Magic borne plagues continue to eat away at the remaining human cities. A sickness that doesn’t merely kill, but creates aberrations from the stricken: people twisted by magic into something dark, dangerous, and powerful.

But when Azzy’s brother, Armin, is infected and cast out into the Above, she sets out after him, determined to be there for him no matter what he becomes. The world Above is full of monsters, both wild and cunning, some more human than Azzy was led to believe.

Her search for Armin leads her to Avergard, a ruthless city of inhuman lords and twisted creatures. Azzy must find allies and forge new bonds in this broken world, brave the perils of the Above, and reach Armin before his new power is used to open the Gate once more.

MY THOUGHTS SO FAR…

I’m about 30% into Marrow Charm by Kristin Jacques and so far I can tell that this is the kind of dark fantasy that I adore. I love the world-building and I think that Kristin has done an amazing job and showing how dark and desolate the Heap is, how people are cruel and the monsters that lurk in the tunnels.

I really like Azzy and Armin. They have such a big sibling bond and it’s a beautiful thing to see in a book this dark. This book is a YA fantasy with magic and honestly, I’m really enjoying what I’ve read so far. I think that the world, the plot, the characters and the magic system are very intricate, very well thought out and I am just loving my time reading this book.

I have no idea what is going to happen next, but I can’t wait to find out more about all the characters, the Above and what events will befall them. This is definitely a book for you if you like fantasy that is on the darker side, great characters and a lovely sibling bond, a unique and desolate world, complex magic and great writing. I can already tell this is a book I’ll adore and I can’t wait to read more and finish it hopefully very soon! I’ll aim to get my review up next week.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR – KRISTIN JACQUES

Kristin Jacques is an author from small-town New England. She grew up in the sticks, surrounded by river wildlife, and various swamp inhabitants. Somehow she managed to keep all her toes despite a run in with a snapper or two.

She lives with her husband and sons in another small New England town. She is mighty attached to them. When not writing, she is likely reading, watching a terrific B-Horror flick, or further spoiling the family cats. Sometimes she has blue hair.
